By Greg Cohen, Professional Numismatist and
Consignment Director, U.S. and World Coins
Excitement is building both in
the U.S. and across the pond in Britain, as the long anticipated sale of the
Thos. H. Law Collection of English Gold Coins is less than a week away. The
collection will cross the auction block in Rosemont, as part of the Stack’s
Bowers and Ponterio official auction of the American Numismatic Association’s
World’s Fair of Money on the evening of Tuesday, August 13, 2013 at 6pm Central
Time. Collectors and dealers have packed the Stack’s Bowers offices in Irvine
and New York for pre-sale lot viewing; at times there were lines to get a seat
in the viewing room. Demand for the catalog has been very strong, a direct
result of the quality, depth, and breadth of the collection, as well as the
expertly written descriptions and historical notes, and superb photography and
layout. We suspect that the catalog will long be housed in numismatic reference
libraries, alongside the standard British numismatic references.
As said above, we had strong
demand for the catalog, and there were large crowds during our viewing
sessions. As these words are being typed, the lots are being prepared for their
shipment to the Donald Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont. Lot viewing
beings at 2pm Central Time on Friday, August, 9. Be sure to get there early to
secure your seat. Complete lot viewing hours are noted on our website and in
the catalog. If you need verbal opinions of any coin in the Law Collection (or
any other session in the sale) please contact us now.
Now is the time to make your
bidding plans. Remember we have many ways for you to bid in our sales: in
person, online prior to the sale, mail/fax (be sure to follow any instructions
in the catalog), speak to one of our auction services team members, bid during
the auction live using our Stack’s Bowers at Home system, or you can make
arrangements to bid on the phone during the sale. Due to the demand, be sure to
get your phone bid requests in early so we can accommodate you.
Since April, we have been
marketing the Law Collection. Once the gavel falls on the final lot on Tuesday
night, the coins that Thos. Law adored will all have found homes in new
cabinets. The new owners will no doubt share that same pride of ownership that
Mr. Law felt, each coin a testament to his vision of a numismatic depiction of
the history of England. On behalf of the entire staff that spent months putting
this wonderful sale together, I would like to wish all bidders the best of luck
at the sale, and offer congratulations to the winning bidders, who will add
their names to these wonderfully pedigreed coins.
