Question: What is a store card? –M.A.
Answer: The term “store card” refers to a metallic
token, such as a Civil War or Hard Times token, that bears the name of a
specific merchant, store, tradesman or business. Thus, an 1844 copper cent-sized token bearing
the name of J. Cochran, bellfounder, of Batavia, New York, is considered to be
a store card. Somewhat related are “patriotic” and “political” tokens, usually
with motifs relating to political figures, issues or sentiments.
