By Matt Quinn, Assistant Director of Currency
The United States paper currency
department at Stack’s Bowers Galleries is pleased to present an important
public auction sale once again at the 2013 Whitman Baltimore Winter Expo on
Thursday November 7, 2013. Over 750 showcased lots will be offered to the
collecting community, in addition to the 300 Internet only lot session closing
on Tuesday, November 12, 2013. Great diversity of genres has always been a
trademark for our banknote auctions and this sale continues that trend. The
sale contains notes from all facets of American paper money from colonial times
to modern day Small Size Currency.
A diverse selection of historical
currency from the colonial to obsolete banknote issuing periods commences the
public auction session. Rare New Hampshire colonial notes including a superb
August 24, 1775 3 Pounds, formerly from the Boyd collection, will be sold. Rare
obsolete proofs are showcased including a specialized Philadelphia collection
with rare color proofs and well vignetted rarities from the 1990 American
Banknote Archives sale. Chester L. Krause, publisher and longtime collector,
has consigned further notes from his vast holdings including rare lumber
company scrip note sheets and individual rare scrip notes, many plated in his
Wisconsin obsolete note reference.
Federally issued notes of the
United States are the focus of our paper money sale catalog, with important
National Bank notes from the Watermelon Collection Part II leading the way.
This second part follows up our well received and extremely successful offering
of Large Size type notes featured in our August 2012 ANA sale. This second part
includes a diverse and extraordinary variety of National Bank notes with
countless rarities from Ohio and Pennsylvania. Seven examples of the coveted “Lazy Deuce” designs
are part of this collection. Nevada will be a highlight state in this auction
as well, with eight elusive notes offered from the “Battle Born” state. Popular Large Size notes, with many important
condition rarities, are highlighted by an important 1890 “Ornate Back” $10
Treasury Note in PMG Gem Uncirculated 66 EPQ.
Small Size currency, currently
used and always in vogue with collectors, includes a monumental discovery item,
which will certainly cause excitement. The note is a previously unknown 1928C $10
“Star” replacement from the Chicago district, serial number G00647785*. Experts
Peter Huntoon and Jamie Yakes commented thus on the discovery, “We therefore
realize that only a small fraction of the 7,200 that might have been printed
ever got out. In fact, we consider it a miracle that any reached circulation. The
1928C star shown here was not an expected note.” Other Small Size rarities
abound, including a pleasing mid-grade 1933 $10 Silver Certificate among
others.
As we prepare to conclude our
2013 paper money auction calendar, we are already working on our 2014 auction
schedule, which promises to hold many significant events for all genres of
collectible currency. With the market trending upwards we encourage you to call
one of our United States currency specialists to consign to one of our upcoming
rare currency auctions.
