Several groups of Polish and Russian coins have been consigned to our Stack’s Bowers and Ponterio official auction for the American Numismatic Association’s World’s Fair of Money. One important piece is a rare and historic 50 Zlotych from the Congress Kingdom of Poland, struck in 1829. The Congress Kingdom was created in the aftermath of the Napoleonic Wars during the Congress of Vienna in 1815, which gave possession of Poland to the Czar of Russia. During this time, much of the coinage was struck in silver in designs similar to those of Mother Russia. Limited numbers of gold coins were struck for use in Poland. This high grade survivor, encapsulated as AU-58 by NGC, is one of the finer pieces known, as most show some signs of cleaning. It is well struck, with most details in the hair and wreath delineated, and has good luster and color. This coin will generate much attention when it crosses the block in Chicago.
